Strike shuts down Brussels airport
Firefighters and security personnel staged a 10 1/2-hour wildcat strike Friday, forcing the temporary shutdown of Brussels International Airport and causing chaos for holiday travelers.
Airlines were forced to cancel or delay all flights out of the airport for most of Friday after security personnel and firefighters set up picket lines outside the airport's main entrance at 6 a.m., leading to mass chaos for travelers at the end of the Easter holidays, one of the busiest weekends of the year.
Incoming flights also were affected and could not land after the airport was closed down due to safety concerns.Unions reached an agreement with management late Friday afternoon, calling off the strike after more than 10 hours.
